Godrej Hill View Estate Khalapur – Overview

We take an integrated approach when it comes to building sustainable communities located near our areas of operation. The areas of focus for these communities are education, livelihood, health and sanitation, and the environment - with greater emphasis on women empowerment, livelihood, and community ownership. To set up a community for Godrej Khalapur - We have partnered with the Water Organization Trust (WOTR) for 3 years to help empower women through health, sanitation and livelihood creation, as well as provide safe drinking water to the community by constructing water storage tanks and check dams. With the help of the Maharashtra Forest Department and local communities, we have planted 2000 trees. This partnership has created a water storage capacity of 3.42 million liters for the community of Khalapur, Maharashtra.

Education is a key focus for Godrej, and we have set up a Disha Skilling Centre to make local youths employable. We believe in taking a holistic approach to education, and our goal is to provide the best infrastructure, clean and green environments, and safe and conducive environments for learning and development. In addition, Godrej continues to hold various activities on an ongoing basis to improve the quality of education at the school by conducting sessions on health and hygiene, spoken English, sports activity and life skills education through employee volunteering and community resource mobilization.At Godrej & Boyce, we have initiated various sustainable community initiatives in 21 villages across 10 districts of 6 states in India, in partnership with 19 other organizations.

Our team members at Godrej Interio adopted the Zilla Parishad Girls School in Shirwal. Maharashtra in line with our commitment to build an inclusive India. We interacted with the Department of Education, Maharashtra to identify schools in the region that have inadequate infrastructure facilities. Over 250 girls attend the Zilla Parishad School and most of them come from underprivileged backgrounds. Our team came up with a design for a model school that can be easily replicated in all government schools in India, in order to build a more inclusive environment for girls.

We not only provided school furniture, but also undertook infrastructure development initiatives to revamp the school. To encourage complete learning and development among the students, we improved the layout of the school by developing a play area and garden.We wanted to enhance the aesthetics and safety of the school, so we decided to paint it a new color and replace the floor tiles. We waterproofed the roof, made electrical repairs, constructed new toilet blocks and refurbished the kitchen. We also set up a water tank to provide clean drinking water to the students.

Finally, to build a culture of understanding, we carried out cleaning of the entire premises and painted the walls with messages on team sports, learning and environment. All Hails to the massive development project for Godrej Khalapur. We supported the school by providing high quality, child-friendly furniture, computers, science lab equipment and play equipment. To take Godrej Khalapur initiative further, we plan to engage Godrejites by regularly volunteering at the school on health and hygiene, English speaking, sports and life skills education. Chhayatai Jadhav, Sarpanch, Village Palashi, shared, “Government aid is minimal and it delays the development work. With Godrej Interio we have managed to change the look of the school and made it a more inspiring place to learn.”
